The Santa Cruz River valley serves as the primary corridor for settlement and transit in this southern Arizona landscape, where the communities of Rio Rico and Calabasas are centered. Significant portions of the land are dedicated to conservation and heritage, including sections of Tumacacori National Historical Park and the Coronado National Forest. The geography is defined by a series of dramatic canyons, such as Guevavi Canyon and Calabasas Canyon, which channel seasonal runoff into the main river system. In the southern portion of the quadrangle, the outskirts of Nogales begin to appear near Mt Benedict, showing the modern infrastructure and residential expansion along the Nogales-Wash. Smaller water features like Cowhead Tank and the confluence of Sonoita Creek with the Santa Cruz highlight the critical role of water management in this arid region.
