The Ohio River winds through this river valley, separating the riverfront city of Rising Sun in Indiana from the rolling hills of Kentucky. This 2016 survey illustrates the persistent importance of the river floodplains, marked by several distinct “bottoms” such as Upper East Bend Bottom, Lower East Bend Bottom, and Mexico Bottom. These fertile lowlands are bordered by steep ridges, including Mead Ridge and Indian Hill, where the landscape transitions into complex drainage networks formed by Gunpowder Creek, Arnold Creek, and Lick Creek.
