Elkhead Reservoir and the Yampa River define this high-country drainage system in Northwest Colorado as it appeared in the early 21st century. The landscape is characterized by a dense network of seasonal and perennial watercourses, including Elkhead Creek and the Dry Fork Elkhead Creek, which carve out numerous named gulches. The drainage pattern is particularly evident in the south, where Coal Bank Gulch and Cary Gulch converge toward the river valley.
