Rodear Flat and the surrounding drainage basins of Elko County define this high-desert landscape in northern Nevada. The topography is dominated by the winding course of the South Fork Little Humboldt River, which carves through the terrain as it flows generally westward. This 2012 survey illustrates the sparse but critical network of water sources that sustain the region, including Snowstorm Creek and the drainage of First Creek. To the southwest, the First Creek Basin forms a distinct geographic feature among the network of unimproved roads and seasonal waterways. The map reveals a remote ranching or grazing territory where the naming of even small flats and creek basins provides essential navigational markers in an otherwise vast and open environment.
