Rincon Indian Reservation and San Pasqual Indian Reservation lands dominate the northern and central portions of this San Diego County landscape, where the foothills meet the deep canyons of the Cleveland National Forest. The geography is defined by a series of high flats and seasonal watercourses, including Hellhole Creek and Paradise Creek, which feed into the larger basins. Significant late-1940s land use is visible at Melrose Ranch and Vineyard Ranch, highlighting the area's agricultural foundations near the shore of Lake Wohlford.

A network of unimproved roads and light-duty tracks, including Woods Valley Road, connects these remote settlements and the Bear Valley School. The topography transitions from the dramatic height of Rodriguez Mountain and Paradise Mountain down to level areas such as Sycamore Flats and Cienaga Flats. These flats provided rare level ground in a landscape otherwise carved by Boden Canyon and Escondido Creek.
