The Muskingum River dominates the eastern edge of this landscape, its path punctuated by the namesake Rokeby Lock and the riverfront hamlets of Durant and Eagleport. Moving westward away from the river valley, the terrain transitions into the high ridges and deep hollows of the Appalachian Plateau, including Opossum Hollow and Poplar Ridge. This interior is characterized by a network of small, scattered settlements like Triadelphia, Joetown, and Morganville, often situated at road junctions or near the headwaters of numerous creeks.
