High ridges like German Ridge separate these drainage basins, creating a landscape of dramatic elevation changes and narrow agricultural corridors. Long-established travel routes such as Co Hwy 25 and the newer Southeast Minnesota Trl follow the natural topography of the land. On the eastern edge, the terrain drops toward the river plain near Minnesota City and Goodview, where Duck Slough and Straight Slough mark the edge of the Mississippi's vast wetland system.
