Roof Butte stands as a prominent high point in the high desert of the Shiprock Agency region, where the state lines of Arizona and New Mexico meet at the border of Apache and San Juan Counties. This 2018 survey documents a landscape defined by significant geologic formations, including Beautiful Mtn and the northern reaches of the Tunitcha Mountains and Chuska Mountains. The area is characterized by a network of seasonal watercourses such as Little Shiprock Wash, Red Wash, and Sanostee Wash, which dictate the drainage patterns across this arid terrain.
