Rose City and the neighboring community of Lupton anchor this 1965 mid-century look at Ogemaw County, where the transition from industrial timbering to conservation and recreation is clearly visible. The map records the Old Houghton Railroad Grade and another Old Railroad Grade cutting through the landscape, remnants of the logging infrastructure that once dominated this region. These former rail lines are juxtaposed with the sprawling boundaries of the Huron National Forest and the Au Sable State Forest, which now preserve the wooded hills and numerous water bodies like Grousehaven Lake and the oddly-named Devils Washbasin.
