The high-altitude scientific installations at Sunspot and the Apache Point Observatory dominate the central crest of the Sacramento Mountains in this 2011 survey. Perched near Sacramento Peak, these facilities are surrounded by a complex network of canyons and ridges, including Cathey Peak and Alamo Peak. The terrain is deeply incised by the headwaters of the Sacramento River and Rio Peñasco, which flow through heavily wooded National Forest lands.

Evidence of early 20th-century settlement remains near the northeast corner, where the community of Marcia and the Marcia Cemetery sit along the Rio Peñasco. This era of mountain life is further represented by Lamalone Lodge and various canyon labels that reflect local family names or descriptive pioneer terms, such as Dirty Drawers Canyon, Johnson Canyon, and Schofield Canyon.
