Lincoln National Forest dominates this high-altitude landscape in the southern Sacramento Mountains. The terrain is characterized by a complex network of deep drainages such as Dirty Drawers Canyon and Schofield Canyon, which eventually feed into the upper reaches of the Sacramento River and Rio Penasco. Scientific and observation facilities are notable here, including the Apache Point Observatory and the Alamo Lookout, taking advantage of the clear skies and elevation.
