About this map

The Saint John River forms the international boundary between Maine and Canada, anchoring a landscape where riverfront settlements like Saint John and Bradbury have long defined the local geography. This northern Aroostook County terrain is characterized by the Upper Saint John River Valley, featuring numerous river islands such as Hunnewell Island, Caton Island, and Wheelock Island. Local history and genealogy are centered around the riverfront and its religious landmarks, including the Saint John Baptist Church and several burial grounds like Saint John Catholic Cem and Saint Charles Cem. Moving away from the water, the land rises into dense woods where historical access is marked by the Carter Brook Tote Rd, leading toward the inland Back Settlement. A dense network of tributaries, including Thibideau Brook, Kelly Brook, and Paradis Brook, drain the high ground into the valley below.
