Salley and Springfield anchor this portion of the South Carolina Midlands, where the boundary between Aiken Co and Orangeburg Co cuts through a landscape defined by an intricate network of creeks and named ponds. The local topography is dominated by the drainage of Dean Swamp Cr and Goodland Cr, which feed several small reservoirs including Lake Maxine, Millers Pond, and Johnsons Pond. These water bodies and their surrounding bottomlands traditionally supported the agricultural and milling operations of the region, evidenced by the location of Capers Mill Pond near the town of Salley.
