Salmon Mountain dominates this Klamath Mountains landscape in Humboldt County, serving as a focal point for a network of ridges and high-elevation water sources. The 2012 survey illustrates a terrain defined by dramatic names and primitive infrastructure, where the Salmon Summit Trl follows the high ground of Salmon Summit. This area is characterized by isolated outposts like Mullens Camp and Eightmile Camp, positioned near the headwaters of numerous drainages including Red Cap Cr and Nordheimer Cr. Significant landmarks such as the Devils Backbone and Horse Trail Ridge provide a clear view of the complex topography that constrained early travel. Remote water bodies including Red Cap Lake, Nordheimer Lake, and Rock Lake are tucked into the steep slopes below Whiteys Peak and Indian Rocks, marking a wilderness area primarily accessible via forest routes and trails.
