The Rio Grande corridor near the northern edge of Socorro County defines this landscape, where the river's path is managed by the Alamillo Ditch and the San Acacia Drainage Canal. The settlement of San Acacia serves as a focal point, anchored by the San Acacia Post Office and the San Acacia- Polvadera Interchange. To the west, the arid terrain is carved by numerous seasonal drainages, including the broad sandy bed of the Rio Salado and smaller courses like Arroyo Chanthe and Arroyo Tio Lino.
