The San Juan River carves a winding path through this high desert landscape, defining the deep relief of San Juan Canyon and the surrounding plateaus. The topography is dominated by the dramatic uplift of Comb Ridge, a massive monocline that runs north-to-south across the quadrangle, flanked by the broad drainage of Comb Wash. This area of the Shiprock Agency is marked by severe geological features such as the distinctive Mule Ear and the expansive Lime Ridge to the northwest.
