The Pancake Range dominates this portion of Nye County, where the high-altitude terrain is punctuated by vital water sources. To the south, Portuguese Mtn rises above the landscape, serving as a landmark near the cluster of Portuguese Spring and Martilletti Spring. These springs, along with Sand Spring in the northwest, define the survival patterns of the high desert, providing the only reliable water for cattle or wildlife in an otherwise arid environment.
