Sanders serves as a central point of settlement on the southern banks of the Yellowstone River, which dominates the local topography as it winds through the center of this landscape. The river's influence is evident in the irrigation infrastructure of the Yellowstone Canal and the complex drainage systems formed by Starved-to-Death Cr and Hay Cr. This region in Treasure and Rosebud counties is defined by its wide valleys and coulees, including Mission Valley, Howard Valley, and the prominent Roach Coulee.
