The Columbia River carves a deep path through the plateau in this northern Washington landscape, forming the boundary between Okanogan and Douglas Counties. Along this stretch of the river, the water transitions through several named features including the Nespelem Rapids, Equilibrium Rapids, and Monaghan Rapids, with Buckley Bar providing a distinct landing along the eastern shore. The upland terrain is characterized by a series of high-altitude lakes and drainage systems, most notably Black Lake, Rock Lake, and Smith Lake which sit amidst a network of canyons and creeks.
