The Umatilla National Forest dominates the northern reaches of this Union County landscape, where the rugged descent from Huckleberry Mountain and Middle Ridge gives way to the open agricultural expanse of the Grande Ronde Valley. Evidence of the region’s long-standing grazing and timber traditions is visible in isolated outposts like Finley Creek Cow Camp, Stanley Cabin, and Craigs Cabin, which are scattered among the canyons and ridges.

Hydrology plays a central role in the topography here, with numerous perennial sources such as Sanderson Spring and McMullen Spring feeding into a network of drainages including Phillips Creek and Mill Creek. The southern half of the map transitions into a more settled pattern of straight-line roads, such as Behrens Lane and Loop Road, which define the valley floor below the looming presence of Pfefferkorn Ridge.
