Sapelo Sound serves as the central hydrographic feature of this coastal Georgia landscape, where the South Newport River defines the boundary between Liberty and McIntosh counties. The area is a complex network of barrier islands and salt marshes, anchored by the northern reaches of Sapelo Island and the expansive Blackbeard Island. On the southern edge of the sound, High Point and the Reynolds Duck Pond mark the upper portion of Sapelo, while to the north, the southern tip of Saint Catherines Island overlooks the Atlantic Ocean. The Intracoastal Waterway threads through these tidal reaches, following the deep channels of Johnson Creek and the river bends. Significant marsh islands like Wahoo Island, Oldnor Island, and Barbour Island—which features the Barbour Island Airport—illustrate the intricate land-and-water patterns typical of the Georgia Sea Islands.
