This high-altitude landscape is defined by its massive flat-topped formations, including Soap Mesa, Blue Mesa, and Sapinero Mesa, which overlook the dramatic depths of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison. The area is largely managed by federal agencies, with the Gunnison National Forest and the Curecanti National Recreation Area covering much of the terrain.
