Newellton and the surrounding alluvial landscape of Tensas Parish are defined by an intricate network of waterways and ridges. In this 2015 edition, the town sits as a primary settlement point near Newells Ridge, while the smaller community of Saranac anchors the southwestern portion of the sheet. The territory is dominated by slow-moving bayous and sloughs, including the prominent Beck Bayou, Routh Bayou, and Cypress Bayou, which follow the natural meanders of the Mississippi River floodplain.
