The Superior National Forest encompasses much of this landscape in northeast Saint Louis County, characterized by a complex network of waterways and extensive wetlands. The Little Fork River meanders across the northern section, while the namesake Sassas Creek and the Rice River define the central drainages. To the south, Big Rosendal Lake and Rosendal Lake sit among numerous unnamed ponds and the vast Lost Lake Swamp.
