The Superior National Forest dominates this section of northeast Saint Louis County, characterized by a complex network of wetland and riparian systems. The Little Fork River winds across the northern landscape, while the central portion is defined by the expansive Lost Lake Swamp. These wetlands are drained by numerous smaller waterways, including Sassas Cr and the Rice River, which thread through the timbered sections of the forest.
