Scales Mound and the surrounding township of Jo Daviess County are defined by a high-elevation landscape of named bluffs and peaks. The northern reach is punctuated by Squirrel Grove Mound, Hudson Mound, and Wenzel Mound, which tower over the drainage basins of the W Fork Apple River and Coon Cr. This topography was a natural path for early transit, evidenced by the route of the Chicago Great Western railroad corridor and the alignment of W Stagecoach Trl.
