The Buffalo Gap National Grassland dominates this portion of the western South Dakota prairie, where the landscape is defined by elevated landforms and significant drainages. The Cheyenne River cuts across the southwestern corner, joined by seasonal waters from Spring Cr and Indian Cr. This 2015 survey illustrates the characteristic "tables" of the region—flat-topped plateaus that rise above the surrounding draws and flats. Notable examples include Kube Table, Hart Table, and Zebell Table.
