Black Hills National Forest occupies the northwestern corner of this territory, where the terrain rises toward Table Mtn and the distinct formation of Schoolmarm Butte. The landscape is defined by a network of drainage systems including Redwater Cr and its northern and southern branches, which carve through the high plains of Crook County. Lower elevations open into the broad Government Valley to the southwest, while the northeastern section transitions into the broken topography of The Brakes near Sandstone Mtn.
