Scratchgravel Hills dominate the central terrain of this quadrangle just northwest of the Montana state capital. The area is a complex landscape of mining history and modern growth, anchored by the Franklin Mine and the aviation activity at Fort Harrison Army Airfield. The settlement of Tobin and the community of Iron sit near the base of these heights, where the Helena Valley Canal and Tenmile Creek provide essential water infrastructure to the valley. Genealogists will find this sheet particularly valuable for its dense concentration of burial grounds, including the Independent Order of Odd Fellows Cem, Forest Vale Cem, and the Lewis and Clark County Cem. The map traces the transition from the steep drainages of Butcherknife Gulch and Iowa Gulch to the expanding residential grids of Helena Valley West Central.
