The Scratchgravel Hills dominate the western landscape of this area just north of Helena. This rugged terrain is incised by numerous drainages including Butcherknife Gulch, Iowa Gulch, and Iron Gulch, illustrating the complex topography that buffers the city from the valley floors. To the south, the military presence at Fort Harrison and the Fort Harrison Army Airfield marks the transition from suburban settlement to federal lands.
