1927 Map of Second Lake

About this map

High-altitude headwaters of the Connecticut River dominate this 1927 survey of the northernmost tip of New Hampshire. The landscape is defined by its deep glacial lakes and the rugged borderlands between Pittsburg and the Canadian frontier at Quebec. While the northern reaches remain wild, the presence of Schoppe Dam and a series of numbered logging outposts like Camp No 34 and Camp No 8 reveal a landscape utilized for timber and water management. Early tourism and sporting life are anchored at Idlewild and Camp Otter on the shores of Second Lake. Two distinct summits, Deer Mtn and Magalloway Mtn, are capped with a Fire Tower, serving as critical lookout points for the surrounding timberlands during the early twentieth century.
