Lava Hot Springs occupies the northwestern corner of this study, where the Portneuf River valley meets the southern reaches of the Fish Creek Range. The landscape is dominated by the high-elevation crests of the Portneuf Range, culminating at the namesake Sedgwick Peak. A significant geographical boundary, the Columbia River Great Basin Divide, traverses the eastern half of the quadrangle, separating the waters that flow toward the Pacific from those that drain into the interior basin.
