The Moccasin Mountains rise sharply in the southeast corner of this central Montana landscape, giving way to a high-plains geography defined by expansive benches and intricate coulee systems. The Seventytwo Hills and the adjacent Seventytwo Bench dominate the central terrain, illustrating the topographic transition from the mountain foothills to the flatter expanses of Marshall Flat.

A network of intermittent and perennial watercourses, including Willow Creek, Ming Coulee, and Alkali Creek, has carved a complex drainage pattern across the region. In the south, Warm Spring Creek and Duck Creek flow near the base of the mountains, while deep incisions like Sennett Canyon and Bedrock Gulch highlight the erosional forces at work in the higher elevations. The area is marked by a sparse network of tracks, including a Jeep Trail, reflecting the open rangeland and remote character of Fergus County during the late 1970s.
