Industrial potash mining and the deep desert canyons of the Colorado River define this corner of San Juan County. The landscape is dominated by the Texas Gulf Potash Ponds, high-altitude evaporation basins that contrast with the surrounding red rock. These facilities are accessed by the winding Potash Road, which follows the contours of the canyon rims above Shafer Basin.
