Umatilla National Forest and Malheur National Forest dominate this high-country landscape in eastern Oregon, meeting near the prominent crest of Sharp Ridge. The terrain is defined by a dense network of mountain meadows and water sources, including Keeney Meadow to the north and a cluster of family-named openings to the south such as Shumway Meadow and Macy Meadow. The southern edge of the quadrangle is anchored by the Middle Fork John Day River, while the northern peaks include Putney Mtn.
