Umatilla National Forest and Malheur National Forest meet across this high-elevation landscape, where the geography is defined by a dense network of meadows and named springs. Putney Mtn anchors the northwest corner, overlooking Putney Meadows, while the namesake Sharp Ridge divides the drainages of Junkens Cr and Indian Cr. The map reveals a land utilized for seasonal grazing and timber, marked by numerous clearings such as Pizer Meadow, Reynolds Meadow, and Hunter Meadow. These open spaces are sustained by perennial sources like Oasis Spring and Dutton Spring. In the southern portion, the headwaters of Big Cr and Mosquito Cr flow through complex terrain toward the Middle Fork John Day River corridor, illustrating the transition between two of Oregon's major national forests.
