Umatilla National Forest and Malheur National Forest meet in this high-elevation landscape within the Greenhorn Mountains. This 2023 survey documents a remote wilderness defined by a vast network of meadows and seasonal springs. From the northern reaches of Putney Meadows near Putney Mtn to the southern Onion Gulch Meadow, the terrain is punctuated by significant mountain ridges and deep gulches. The Middle Fork John Day River cuts through the southwest corner, while the Sharp Ridge spine dominates the central topography. Numerous named meadows, including Pizer Meadow, Hunter Meadow, and Reynolds Meadow, suggest a landscape historically utilized for summer grazing. This modern record also traces specialized travel routes such as the Sharps Ridge Trl and Beeman Junkins Trl, which navigate the steep divide between the Desolation Creek and Indian Creek drainages.
