Shepard Reservoir sits in the southeastern corner of Montana's Carter County, marking a landscape defined by ranching operations and water management. Isolated ranch sites such as Crago Ranch, Newland Ranch, and Raber Ranch are connected by a network of specialized routes like Bentonite Haul Rd, indicating the area's dual reliance on livestock and local mineral extraction. The hydrology is dominated by seasonal drainages and numerous man-made impoundments, including Bull Creek Reservoir, Antelope Hill Reservoir, and King Reservoir, which capture runoff from Bull Cr and Crow Cr. To the south, the Belle Fourche River and its tributary, Kilpatrick Cr, cut through the terrain near the Wyoming border. This 2012 survey provides a clear view of the rural infrastructure required to maintain life and industry in this arid region of the High Plains.
