Sherman Mountain dominates this portion of the Ruby Mountains within the Humboldt National Forest. The landscape is defined by its transition from high peaks to the low-lying Ruby Valley, where a series of marshy water bodies including Y Pond, Banana Pond, and Brush Pile Pond line the eastern edge of the range. The name Fort Ruby Spring points to the area's 19th-century military history along the central overland route.
