Kootenai National Forest and Lolo National Forest meet in this 2017 survey of a high-country drainage system along the border of Sanders and Flathead counties. The landscape is defined by the northern flow of the Thompson River, which is paralleled by the Thompson River ACM Rd and the Thompson River Co Rd in the western valleys. The rugged topography rises sharply to Bar Z Peak in the north and the high ground at Pinehill to the east.
