Pelican serves as the primary coastal settlement on this portion of Chichagof Island, situated along the eastern shore of Lisianski Inlet. The town's maritime dependence is evidenced by Pelican Harbor and the proximity of the Pelican Reservoir. Further north, the smaller landing at Sunnyside marks another point of human activity within the expansive Tongass National Forest.

The landscape is defined by high peaks and drainage systems that feed into the surrounding saltwater.
