Sixteen Butte and a cluster of high desert volcanic formations define this section of the Deschutes National Forest. The landscape is characterized by its volcanic genealogy, featuring distinct elevations such as Rogers Butte, Poly Top Butte, and the appropriately named Deadlog Butte. The 2011 survey reveals an intricate network of forest service arteries, primarily centered around Natl Forest Develop Road 23 and Natl Forest Develop Road 700 Rd. These routes provide access to the high plateaus and lower drainage basins between Horseshoe Butte and Wigtop Butte. The layout of the road systems reflects modern forest management and resource access in this remote portion of Central Oregon.
