Superior National Forest dominates this section of Saint Louis County, where the headwaters of major northern drainage systems emerge from the wetlands. The Saint Louis River flows through the northern reaches of the quadrangle, while the southern portion is defined by the Whiteface River and its North Branch. Small, isolated settlements like Skibo, Clappers, and Reno are scattered along a network of forest roads and spurs, including the prominent Seven Beavers and Martinetto routes. The landscape is characterized by its high concentration of glacial lakes and creeks, from the larger Bassett Lake and Cadotte Lake in the south to Stone Lake and the Butterball chain in the northeast. This 2016 survey documents the enduring wilderness character of the Iron Range periphery, illustrating the intricate hydrography of Laird Creek, Reno Creek, and Skinner Creek that feeds the region's expansive river basins.
