The Saint Louis River and its numerous tributaries, including Laird Creek and Baird Cr, define this wetland-rich portion of the Superior National Forest. This interior region of St. Louis County is anchored by the small settlements of Skibo, Clappers, and Reno, which are connected by a network of specialized roads and spurs such as Skibo Spur D and St Louis River Spur C. To the south, recreation is centered around Cadotte Lake, where the Cadotte Lake Campground is situated near the headwaters of the N Br Whiteface River. The landscape is a complex of hydrologic features, from the large expanse of Stone Lake in the northeast to smaller flows like Butterball Cr and Jenkins Cr, illustrating the dense water network typical of the Minnesota Iron Range hinterlands.
