Fremont National Forest dominates this section of south-central Oregon, where the high desert floor meets the rising peaks of the northern Basin and Range province. The landscape is defined by its hydrothermal activity and dramatic relief, centered on the towering Slide Mountain and its namesake Slide Lakes. Along the northern edge of the map, the alkaline waters of Summer Lake and the geothermal features at Gibson Hot Spring and Summer Lake Hot Springs mark a distinct transition from the forested heights to the arid playa.
