The Middle Fork Salmon River cuts through the northwest and southwest corners of this high-elevation landscape, where the Boise National Forest and Challis National Forest meet. The area is defined by the protected expanse of the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness, a terrain where transportation is limited to established paths like the Soldier Ridge Trl and Muskeg Creek Trl. These trails provide the only access to a network of alpine waters including Cutthroat Lake, Josephus Lake, and the aptly named Lost Lake.
