The Middle Fork Salmon River marks the western edge of this high-elevation Idaho landscape, where the Challis National Forest and Boise National Forest meet. Surveyed in the early 1970s, the terrain is defined by the sharp ridges of the Sawtooth Range and peaks such as Ruffneck Peak and Cape Horn Mountain. This area is a significant hydrological hub, feeding numerous high-mountain water bodies including the Cape Horn Lakes, Lola Lakes, and the cluster of Mable Lakes.
