Challis National Forest dominates this high-elevation landscape in Custer County, characterized by a complex network of drainages and prominent summits. The terrain is anchored by Sherman Peak in the east and Mayfield Peak to the west, with the headwaters of numerous creeks carving deep into the mountainsides. The hydrological pattern is particularly distinct, showing how Cottonwood Cr and Cold Creek flow north, while the various branches of Mayfield Creek, including the W Fork Mayfield Cr and E Fork Mayfield Cr, drain the southern reaches. The passage of the E Mayfield - Yankee Fork route provides one of the few named navigational markers through this backcountry. This topographic study captures the drainage divides between significant water bodies like McKee Cr, Wickiup Cr, and Ibex Cr, illustrating the primitive road and trail system as it existed in the early 21st century.
