The settlement of May serves as the focal point of this 2023 survey, situated where the Pahsimeroi Valley meets the foothills of the Lost River Range. The landscape is defined by the sweeping drainage of the Pahsimeroi River, which gathers numerous tributaries including Morgan Creek, Patterson Creek, and Sulphur Creek. This remote Idaho valley displays a characteristic high-desert ranching layout, with long straight roads such as Hooper Ln and Pahsimeroi Rd cutting through the basin floor while older routes like the Old Hwy follow the natural contours of the land. In the eastern portion of the valley, the May Airport and the May Cem anchor the community's local infrastructure. To the west, the terrain rises sharply into the Pahsimeroi Mountains, marked by steep drainages like Burnt Spring Gulch and Lawson Creek, illustrating the dramatic vertical transition from the irrigated valley floor to the alpine heights of Custer and Lemhi counties.
