The Salmon River cuts across the southern portion of this Idaho mountain landscape, serving as a primary corridor for recreation and access within the Challis National Forest. By the mid-1960s, a string of established sites including the Mormon Bend Campground, Riverside Campground, and Salmon River Campground dotted the riverbanks, illustrating the area's development as a public gateway to the backcountry.

Away from the water, the terrain is defined by steep drainages like East Basin Creek and Deadwood Creek, which feed into the larger river systems. Higher elevations reveal localized landmarks such as East Basin Lake and the settlement at McGowan. Evidence of resource extraction is present at a marked Mine site situated along the upper reaches of a basin creek, while a network of Jeep Trails provides the only deep access into these high-altitude forest lands.
